Soil acidification and eutrophication on many natural and semi natural habitats throughout western Europe are cited as a major cause of decline in site condition. Rates of succession and dominance of rank grasses and scrub have accelerated at the expense of many species characteristic of, for example, heathlands and species-rich grasslands."
