Sand Martins Riparia riparia are a London and Olympic Park Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Priority Species. Numbers have declined in London because of droughts in the species' overwintering grounds in sub-Saharan Africa and the loss of summer breeding sites. Over a number of years, breeding colonies have been recorded as using drainage holes in concrete banks on the River Lee and associated waterways in the Olympic Park, London.
