Higher Level Stewardship as Prince Charming

Ten years ago, I felt that our farm on the Pevensey Levels was in a position akin to that of Cinderella before she went to the ball. Bullied by the ill winds of a very difficult period in livestock farming and neglected by the perversity of the prevailling mechanisms for funding conservation, we were uncertain of what the future might hold (Hole 1998).
