Letter from the far West Coast

"Living on Ireland's Atlantic rim, one is nudged more than usually into thoughts on the island's biogeography. Driftline bric-a-brac accumulating over the years – the turtle's battered plastron on my wall, a dish of sea beans from Caribbean shores, the odd coconut still in its husk and not a prize from anyone's fayre – conjure mental maps of the coriolis thrust of the ocean's drift."
