Life in a hedge

The author reports on the number of species found in a single Devon hedge, explains why this number is so high, and discusses what this means for hedge and landscape management.

On New Year’s Day 2011, I embarked on a two-year intensive study of a single hedge to see how many species of plant, animal and fungus I could find within it. Why? I wanted to provide further insight into the importance of hedges for wildlife.
