"One of those on my 'list of creatures to find' this year was a sand wasp, one of the many solitary species loosely called digger wasps. To do a bit of geographical name-dropping, I have watched sand wasps in Provence, in Madagascar and along the disused railway near the RSPB headquarters at Sandy, but I wanted to find a colony close to home where I could easily drop in."
