"When I hear the phrase 'magnificent bird', I reach for my Purdey 12-bore. To turn on the writer rather than the bird, you understand. The adjective has become a standard conservation word, especially in press releases, and especially when dealing with brds of prey. Does it mean that if a bird is magnificent it has an extra right to survive?"
