Does rewilding help birds in the uplands? Thirty years of monitoring at Mar Lodge Estate NNR

In 2012, ecologist Adam Watson published his records of 60 years of bird monitoring in northeast Scotland (Watson 2012). Reading these accounts is a remarkable experience.

Situated within the Cairngorms National Park, the National Trust for Scotland’s (NTS) Mar Lodge Estate (MLE) is the UK’s largest National Nature Reserve. Andrew Painting and Shaila Rao ask where does rewilding fit into this landscape which has retained an avifauna that, if not complete, is certainly less depleted than in other parts of the uplands.
