While Britain and Ireland have a relatively poor vascular plant flora compared with the rest of Europe, they are the richest part of Europe for bryophytes (mosses and liverworts). To illustrate this, while Britain has only about 18% of the total European vascular plant flora, it has almost 70% of the European bryophyte flora (Hodgetts 1992).
