The effects of post-war agricultural intensification in reducing semi-natural habitats and the extent and distribution of wildlife in Britain are often quoted, and there are numerous examples of species contracting in the face of habitat destruction caused by farming practices (e.g. Baldock 1990; NCC 1990; Taylor & Bixon 1990).
