The Habitats Directive – Selecting the UK Sites

The Habitat Directive or, to give its official title, Council Directive on the Conservation of Natural Habitats and Wild Fauna and Flora (92/43/EEC), was adopted by member states of the European Community (EC) in May 1992. Like most EC legislation, the Directive is intended to provide a common standard across the EC, and gives a series of measures for nature conservation, set out in 24 articles (Box 1).
