"The lines are being drawn in the Great Debate over the ideal type of English woodland, which readers of British Wildlife have been enjoying lately. The alternative forms of woodland on offer are (1) dark and unmanageable or (2) airy and chopped about. We are invited to choose between the Hambler & Speight wood (BW 6:137-147), a Gothic place of beetle-ridden timbers sinking into the foetid mire, and the Fuller & Warren wood (BW 7:26-37), a scene of order and discipline with windows of sunlight flooding over tapestries of flowers."
