"An American zoologist, writing about 30 years ago, hit the nail on the head when he said that one learned more about the behaviour of a mammal from what could be deduced from its signs than by trying to observe the live animal. This was certainly correct for the mole. You can go badger-watching, deer-stalking, pick out bats flying against the evening sky and even listen to shrews squeaking in the herbage, but mole-watching dooms you to extreme frustration."
