Decline and Recovery of the Otter – a Personal Account

The elusive Otter, Lutra lutra, has attracted me since, as a schoolboy on sailing holidays in the 1940s, I first heard it whistling at night on Hickling Broad. Others have felt the same way, and a survey of readers carried out by BBC Wildlife in 1991 showed the Otter to be the most popular British animal. This was not always so.
