A downland tale of conservation versus super subsidies

Discussion has now turned towards a positive environmental agenda. Instead of bemoaning loss, the trend is to promote long – and short-term targets for environmental enhancement – biodiversity targets. To do this, mechanisms must be found to protect what remains and to put in place schemes for expansion. This has been given added impetus by the signing of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the publication of Biodiversity: The UK Strategy.
