Through a naturalist’s eyes

It was Lazaro Spallanzani who first showed that animals live in a world very differennt from ours. In 1793, he found that blind bats could fly around a room without hitting the walls or bumping into people. In the following year, Charles Jurine demonstrated the corollary that deaf bats are hopelessly confused and blunder about.
