Managing a smallholding or 'hobby-farm' has been a popular pursuit throughout much of this century. Eldred Walker writing in 1901 noted that there were substantial numbers of small hobby-farms which 'seldom pay, yet, if the owner does not attempt too much, they afford much pleasure and healthful employment'.
