"I spent a month in Greenland this summer, as I have done for most years in the last twenty. Perhaps I ought to go somewhere else for a change, but the attractions of the world's largest island are manifold. The scenery is dramatic, even from the windows of a trans-Atlantic airliner. My destination is usually on the north-east coast, of which the whaler William Scoresby wrote 'nothing that I have seen equals it in bold grandeur and interesting character'."
