Letter from the far West Coast

"The dunes at the bottom of the hill are snail heaven. In the first soft days of spring, the so-called 'garden' snails Helix aspersa descend from their hibernating perches on the lee side of driftwood fence-posts and mingle, a bit blue and sand-blasted, with the throng of Capaea nemoralis in all their banded variation."
