Restoring lowland heathland from plantation forestry is a key means of securing the future conservation of a priority habitat, but it can be contentious. Appropriate engagement of the public is important if such work is to succeed. In Britain, heathland is now a relic of a once extensive, landscape-scale habitat that has become highly fragmented and so is vulnerable to change.
