Through a naturalist’s eyes

"The drumming of the Great Spotted Woodpecker is a favourite springtime sound in woodland. It can be heard from January to midsummer and again in September but I find it evocative of the season when the woods are coming to life. The 'drum roll' sounds almost exactly like a sharp nasal snore or the creak of an extremely stiff door and has an echoing, even ventriloquial, quality."
