High the vanes of Shrewsbury gleam

Islanded in Severn stream…

There the ravens feasted far

Abouth the open house of war.

Housman was referring to a time 'ages since', perhaps he had the Middle Ages in mind when Ravens Corvus corax would doubtless have been seen frequently in and around Shrewsbury.
